![]() ![]() I prefer a rougher texture myself, but others clearly disagree with me: they sold out before 7:30 p.m. Pizzas, of course, but also arancini, risotto di mare (with shrimp, calamari, and clams), and vegetarian pastas.Īs for the fish: the batter was much smoother and thinner than others, a dark golden flaky crust. ![]() If you or members of your party (hi, mom) spend too much time socializing at the bar and fail to order before the fish is sold out, Capish has a great offering of vegetarian options. I went first for happy hour with some of my cousins - no doubt, Capish is a good place to be after work on a Friday. I’d been told by many - even my brother, a picky eater who rarely eats fish - that Capish’s fish fry game was strong. This one came with lots of fries, and coleslaw with a kick, which I guessed came from horseradish. I enjoyed it, my mom described it as “a fish that wanted to be a chicken finger.” Like tops, their batter was thick and heavy, and a bit overcooked. Pastore’s offers their fish fry everyday, for those times when you just can’t wait til the weekend. The Eagle has also closed for the near future, which has caused a lot of heartache. Vince spread the tartar sauce over the entire fish before digging into it, something I’ve never seen before, but I can’t say it’s a bad method. You get one side with your order, and get to choose from any of the Eagle’s regular sides: garlic mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, or onion rings, to name a few. This one was overcooked on the outside with some uncooked batter on the inside - perhaps the batter was too thick to cook evenly, or the heat was too high. Patrick’s Day lights, listening to live acoustic versions of “Folsom Prison Blues” and “Wonderwall,” having drinks with my friend Vince, blissfully unsuspecting the Eagle would soon close and those decorations would never see a party on the 17th. I enjoyed this one in the green glow of early St. After eating this for a lunch, a nap was inevitable. I liked it, but the batter is thick and heavy. ![]() It stayed really, really crispy in the box. The portion was huge, the fries were really tasty, and the coleslaw was one of my favorites. Not to say I don’t expect quality food from Tops (love their olive bar), but I definitely wasn’t expecting a supermarket fish fry to contend with those from our local restaurants. ![]() The LCC is unfortunately closed until further notice. My dear relative Priscilla Lapp got the stuffed haddock, and said it was “out of this world.” Their fish fry and broiled fish is also included in their Friday dinner buffet, though the portions are smaller and the entree version looked a little better quality. The country club has a bunch of other fish options on their menu available throughout the week, like haddock bruschetta and haddock stuffed with crab. The green beans were tasty, though, as was the spinach salad that was included in the $10.99 price. I love tartar sauce, but relied on it a little too heavily to dress this one up. The batter formed lots of delicate peaks, and I love some good texture. They throw in their homemade rolls and muffins, too. I got the sour cream and chive smashed potatoes, which were divine. I’ve found that cardboard boxes prevent sogginess and keep the batter crisper. Some crispiness still held on by the time I got home, but I think the condensation in the styrofoam container and plastic bag did some damage. I think their fish fry would be a serious contender for the best in town if you could eat it in the restaurant. They’re still offering their full menu for delivery or pickup, but call early. Rarely does a restaurant have a lengthy menu while executing each dish with high quality, but D&R does both. I’ve heard a lot of good things about Phather Phelan’s Phriday Phish Phry.īut the good news: many restaurants are still open for takeout, and they need our business more than ever. I’m sorry to say I never got the chance to try Our Lady of Mercy’s fish. The fish fry scene in Le Roy has suffered from COVID-19: Mooney’s is officially closed, the Eagle and Country Club are closed for the near future, the Mason’s and Our Lady of Mercy ended their seasons early, and the Ridge closed. Let’s first state the obvious: the world has changed since Ash Wednesday. ![]()
